Vacation Vs Staycation

With the economy picking up, more people are now able to afford to go abroad for their holidays. We all love sun, sea, sand... or snow, skis and wintery walks. But we've become accustomed to staycations more recently, and who can blame us! Cheaper holidays, home comforts, no silly adapters and no dodgy exchange rates.

So we're going to discuss the pro's and cons of both going away and staying at home for your holiday.

Weather
So it's pretty much number one on our list of "things we look for in a holiday". Whether you like sun soaked beaches or fresh powder slopes, you go at the time of year where you're going to get your value for money tan wise!
Abroad: Okay, you've got the whole world to choose from... you're probably going to land lucky and find a country with a climate you like, such as Cyprus in August, or The Alps in January!
UK: Yeah... great British summer!! We know its pot luck guys, usually you can strike it lucky sunshine wise August into September...but we never let a sprinkling of rain dampen our spirits do we?
WINNER : ABROAD

Culture
Culture vulture is a great description isn't it? It's not all about eating and drinking, lazing about or working on the tan - it seems a waste to go somewhere and not take in all it has to offer.
ABROAD: Such amazing places with a different background to our own. Lets take cities such as Rome, Venice, Barcelona... vibrant, lively and colourful spring to mind. Fantastic wines from Italy, Champagne from France, Chocolates from Belgium. With traditions as old as time and new experiences for us to have which as so different to our own, why wouldn't we want to experience and submerge ourselves in other countries culture and traditions.
UK: We have a fantastic heritage in England, the history is fantastic and the traditions that have been kept alive over centuries are a vital part of our being as a nation. People come from all over the world to visit the tower of London for example. Scotland also has amazing culture, film festivals, royal connections.. what more can we ask for?
WINNER : DRAW

Activities
If you're lucky enough to have a hobby you love and can afford to factor into your holiday, the world is your oyster. Skiing, horse riding, fishing, cycling, surfing and hiking are just a few of many activities you can base your holiday around. With great locations for all of the above, we're a little spoilt for choice.
ABROAD: Surfing hotspots in the Philippines, skiing all over europe, horse riding in the wild west. There's no doubt that destinations all over the world offer something to cater for your specific hobby. You can choose somewhere all year round to suit what you're wanting to do, we can't see a downside to going abroad to enjoy your hobby, and you get the bonus of experiencing a different leisure culture too!
UK: So theres places in the UK that are world renowned for various activities, surfing in Newquay or on the Irish coast and hiking in Scotland exploring different mountains. The only thing we cannot guarantee is the right weather conditions so you get the most of it. ALthough with favorite guilty pleasures like fish n' chips and a real ale to round off your activity day, we can't complain too much!
WINNER : ABROAD

Costs
We always want a good deal. We have to consider losing money on exchange rates, airfare, car parking, petrol, hotel costs, dining out, if you're going skiing you also have to factor in ski hire, lift passes and insurance...and of course new outfits!
Abroad: Britain, the lonely little island, wherever you go from here, you're going to have aeroplane tickets, ferry tickets, or shuttle tickets to pay for. That's your holiday costs pretty much doubled before you're even there. Although lots of places offer great hotel rates, or airlines offering the odd discount, we know the further you travel, the more you pay!
UK: Cheap flights from one end of the country to the other, and with economic cars cheaper nowadays, internal destinations are cheaper and so easily accessible. We're in the middle of the country, so on a tank of fuel, a car can easily get to Newquay for a beach holiday, Scotland for hiking or skiing in winter, London for a city break... it just makes sense! There are always cheap hotel deals to be had too!
WINNER : UK

Accommodation
There's no question that fantastic accommodation can be found at amazing rates, with internet and comparison websites available at every turn, no matter where you go, you're guaranteed to get a fantastic rate. So lets do a spot check, using Trivago I'll search UK city and country breaks for 5 nights for 2 adults, versus America on the same plan, cheapest wins!
ABROAD: New York: New World, Booking.com £43p/n = £215 || Yosemite National Park: Curry Village, Amoma.com £120p/n = £600
UK: London: Comfort Enfield, Hostelword £30p/n = £150 || Peak District National Park:YHA Eyam £39p/n = £195
WINNER : UK

Travel Time
Travelling is all part of the fun, unless you're scared of flying! But gearing up for the journey is all part of the holiday, we love the "Oooh gotta get up at 2am to go to the airport, might not bother going to bed" (we're all guilty!)
ABROAD: With accessibility to Europe easier now than ever, flights at cheap rates and eurorail available from London, we can't say travelling abroad is hard to organise. The only downside is the face that the further you travel, the more you spend and the greater the environmental costs!
UK: So with ferries and cars, public transport and internal flights you can get from one end of the country to the other in just a matter of hours! Plus you get the enjoy not having to drive on the other side of the road!
WINNER : UK

WINNER IS THE UK. Staycations are here to...well.. stay! :)
We couldn't be happier, our lovely isle has so much to offer, beaches, lakes, peaks, mountains, dales... all you could ask for! We love the UK, especially the glorious Peak District.

Sunshine and Sparkling Wine!

So we love the Peak District... Our wonderful hotel is even named after it.

In light of the predicted heat wave we're going to be experiencing over the next few weeks, we have compiled a list of our top five walks and picnic spots. We of course recommend a "Posh Picnic"... petit sandwiches, sparkling wine, elderflower cordial, and a naughty dessert! Whether you're going with our loved one or a group of girls, take a look at our suggestions to make the most of the glorious British summer.

5. High Tor at Matlock
A stunning climb through some shaded woods brings you to the lofty ledge of High Tor... views for miles and even a picnic bench to boot. You can take a ride on the cable cars at the Heights Of Abraham and add a bit of excitement to your day. We recommend a walk down the river and a visit to the Masson Mills Shopping Village to round your day off.

4. Curbar Edge
Curbar Edge has a convenient car park, and a short and beautiful walk to the ridge that follows for miles with views of Chatsworth and Bakewell. There is a particular part of the ridge that juts out, lovely and level we can even recommend it for a BBQ... the stone surface means the grassland won't be damaged! We recommend an evening picnic here, you won't find many more beautiful places to enjoy a Peak District sunset. Just lovely!
http://www.snapthepeaks.co.uk/Walks/Curbar/curbar.htm

3. Padley Gorge
Enjoy a scenic descent into the gorge followed by a leisurely stroll along the river, if you're feeling brave, you can hop across to the other side on some stepping stones. We recommend taking a picnic blanket and pitching up in the sunshine anywhere. To finish, we would always say pop to the ice-cream van and enjoy a 99 whilst walking back to the car.

2. Chatsworth Park
With over 1000 acres to choose from, you're guaranteed to find a quiet spot to relax and enjoy a picnic. Our favourite idea is to park in the Calton Lees car park, you can have a look round the lovely garden centre before wandering into the park to find your spot. Go across the road to a tumble-down building with a bit of history to it (no spoilers here!), and wander along the rivers edge towards the world famous Chatsworth House. The river is deep in places with a slow flowing current and fantastic for a refreshing swim, or a paddle across the river steps a little further downstream. You can grab ice-cream afterwards either at the house, or back at the car park, and if you're in the right season, look out for Chatsworth's resident herd of deer.

1. Dovedale
With hills, rocks, stepping stones and a babbling river, Dovedale is all you could ask for when looking for an idyllic spot for a picnic. Take a walk past the lions head rock, venture into the dove holes and if you're adventurous and somewhat fit, try a mini-hike up Thorpe Cloud. If you're there on a hot day, you can paddle or even swim in the river, and take the stepping stones to the other side. Don't forget to call for an ice-cream on your way home.

The Red Lion
If you like dining al-fresco but don't want to carry a picnic with you, why not pop in and see us for a spot of al-fresco lunch after a walk in the peaks? We serve afternoon tea, starters, mains, desserts and sandwiches too, so there's something for everyone. A sample menu can be found on our website (link below). We serve fresh food daily, so our menu changes accordingly. Please call us to find out about the days menu along with our delicious specials.
